Growing up, there were certain things you heard about Yoruba culture so often that they became part of everyday life: the stories of Oduduwa, the history of Ile-Ife, the deities and traditions passed down for generations. But as you grow older, you realise some of these stories are much bigger than the few lines taught in school.
One of them is Olojo.
The Olojo Festival is an ancient festival celebrated every year in Ile-Ife, Osun State. It is one of the well-known festivals in Yorubaland and an important part of the cultural calendar of Ile-Ife.
The Yoruba word "Olojo" means "The Day of the First Dawn", reflecting gratitude for creation and the existence of humanity.

As I sit in quiet reflection during this year’s Olojo festival, I find myself looking back over the past ten years of a journey deeply connected to my ancestors, my heritage and the enduring spiritual consciousness of the Yoruba people.
The Aare Crown is more than a crown — it is a symbol of the continuity of Ife’s sacred kingship. Worn during Olojo, it carries generations of tradition, meaning and stories, with every detail adding to the legacy of the throne.

Today, Ilé-Ifẹ̀ observes Ọjọ́ Okemogun.
Before the Ooni emerges, the palace is prepared.
Widows of Ile-Ife gather to sweep the palace. A traditional act of preparation and reverence before the King comes out.

Tradition is not just remembered but preserved as the Oonirisa of Ife graces the olojo procession in the sacred Aare Crown — a majestic display of royalty, tradition and the rich heritage of Ile-Ife. 👑✨
