My wife heard the MRI tech tell someone the machine had been "acting weird all morning" right before her scan.

Scheduled for a brain MRI, routine headache follow-up. She's changing into the gown when she hears the tech on the phone in the hallway.

"Yeah, it keeps shutting off mid-scan. I've restarted it three times... No, the engineer can't come until tomorrow... I know, but we're booked solid. I'm just gonna keep running it and hope it holds."

My wife opens the door. "Excuse me?"

Tech jumps. "I'll call you back." Hangs up, turns to my wife with a smile. "All ready?"

"Is the machine broken?"

"Oh, you heard that? No, just a minor glitch. Completely safe."

"You said it keeps shutting off mid-scan."

The tech tries to downplay it. "It's just a software thing. Doesn't affect the imaging quality."

My wife doesn't move. "If it's shutting off, how do you know you're getting complete images?"

"We restart the sequence. Patients don't feel anything...."

"How many times has it shut off today?"

Tech admits it's happened on four of the six scans that morning. Each time they had to start over, doubling the patient's time in the machine.

My wife gets dressed. "I'm not getting in a broken machine. Reschedule me when it's fixed."

Tech gets the supervisor. Supervisor confirms an engineer is coming tomorrow, tries to assure my wife the images are fine despite the glitches.

"Then why is the engineer coming? If it's fine, why fix it?"

No good answer.

My wife rescheduled at a different imaging center. Their machine worked fine. Got her results in two days.

Original facility called three times to apologize and offer a discount on the rescheduled scan.

She never went back.

"Minor glitch" stops being minor when it's your brain being scanned.
