“The Second Lost Cause” (thank you Richard Slotkin). Now, like accounts of the Civil War where the cause of the war wasn’t the issue of slavery but the economy and states’ rights, the reason for Trump’s election isn’t his appeal to grievance, fear, and hatred, its inflation and the economy.
@Brick_Suit It doesn’t hurt me. A decent chunk of the human population has always been susceptible to charlatans who lead them to engage in cult like behavior. The only thing that mildly surprises me is that so many have fallen for a con who isn’t really that great at it.
there's something beautiful about common, one of hip hop's true guardians, standing for her tonight at new york's blue note while a puffy pimp begins his long deserved rot

The Trump campaign is still being hacked
A person or people representing themselves as "Robert" have stolen email communications from individuals associated with the Trump campaign within the last ten days, Popular Information has confirmed.
"Robert" sent me this material, and I've confirmed the legitimacy of non-public information dated September 15, 2024.

WTF has happened to @thedailybeast? Trump has enthusiastically endorsed Robinson and has NOT withdrawn his support. Nor does the article provide any evidence to support that contention.
Ta-Nehisi Coates: "What I suspect is that American media in general thinks of itself as separate from the ends and goals of American power. And I don’t think that’s true." https://t.co/GjuCpdKzWm
Smart strategic comms decisions:
(1) Good timing.
Posting this right after the debate was maximally helpful to the campaign, on top of the endorsement itself. Dropping it that evening made sure it was included in all the post debate analysis. That helped form an impression that Kamala won the debate.
(2) Didn’t coordinate the details with the Harris campaign.
The campaign might have known this was coming (although the official line is that they didn’t), but the post itself seemed to surprise even Tim Walz as he learned about it while doing a live TV interview. That made the endorsement feel more sincere and earnest.
It also extended the news cycle by stoking interest in the campaign’s reaction, which would’ve been less relevant if they had been in on it.
(3) Gave reasons for choosing Harris but didn’t mention “first woman president” or anything similar that would’ve set off a spiraling DEI debate or exacerbate identity-based tribalism. (But the signoff hints at tribalism just enough to start a rallying cry.)
(4) Prefaced the announcement with a reference to an AI of her, which gave air cover against the inevitable accusations that she’s getting too political.
Given the “dangers of spreading misinformation,” she’s not wading into politics for its own sake — she’s just protecting herself, clearing up the truth, and being transparent! She’s going direct with her decision.
(5) Photo was perfect meme fodder.
"Are we going to do a rematch? I just don't know. We'll think about it," Trump told reporters just now. He said he'd theoretically show up for an NBC or a Fox debate, but first "we have to determine whether we want to do it" at all.
Live on Fox, Trump insults the two Fox anchors who have been pitched as debate moderators – Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum – and says "I wouldn't want to have" them. He says he would want Sean Hannity, Jesse Watters or Laura Ingraham to host instead. (An obvious non-starter.)
