Iโll put in my 2 cents on this one from my experience.. I first blew out my knee (Meniscus Tear) playing tag football when I was 16 yrs old; I was a swimmer and Water Polo player so the surgical route gave me a better chance at coming back quicker. It did, but not after some months of physical therapy post surgery. I was able to finish High School with top swimming honors and went on to play Water Polo for my local University, I did multiple triathlons and kept high frequency in my training throughout my 20s, I also surfed all my life and worked for loval Ocean Rescue and felt as if my knee was healthy. Fast forward to my late 20โs while playing soccer I re-injured the same knee and slight meniscus tear which I tried to rehab without a second surgery, BIG MISTAKE. It felt as if I would never go back to 100% but I was retired from any pursue of professional sports so I delt with the pain/inflammation after every physical active with anti-inflammatory and cryo therapy.
Fast forward a year after that re-injury while playing soccer again and I blew 90% of my ACL with a new meniscus tear. This time I had no choice and went with a allograft surgery (tissue bank of a deceased donor ๐) I knew what my recovery would look like so I put my head down and went to work, I did about 45 visits of Physical Therapy starting the day after surgery for about 5 months, by month 6th I was back to surfing and felt about 95% recovered. I would say it took a solid 2 years to feel back to 100%โฆ I fully recovered the knee and muscle atrophy that comes with these type of injuries but happy to say it feels stronger than it ever did in my 20s after the first surgery. .
While knee surgery for cartilage damage may not benefit non/athletes for those who will be doing high performance sports it is absolutely necessary in my opinion, if not you risk re-injury and damaging ligaments later on.
Today Im entering my 40s I still surf, swim and bike almost every week, (no more soccer or Football) but since my last surgery, Ive had zero knee pain and zero issues after performing. The key to gather from this is that we are all different, but the rehabbing process and continuous work to get your pre-injury life back really comes down to how much you are willing to work for it.
Stay Healthy my friends ๐ซก
