“It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, November 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone.”
- A. Bartlett Giamatti (with a small change from October to November)
A judge is scheduled to announce the verdicts in the sexual assault trials of five former members of Canada’s 2018 world juniors hockey team this morning.
Justice Maria Carroccia is expected to begin reading the reasons for her verdicts shortly after court begins at 10 am. It may be several hours before she announces whether each player is guilty or not guilty.
Media and members of the public began lining up outside London’s downtown courthouse just after 6 am. A dozen advocacy groups for sexual assault survivors from across Southern Ontario are planning to hold a rally today outside the courthouse steps.
Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia will announce her verdicts in the London hockey trial of five former 2018 World Junior players on Thursday.

The judge in the sexual assault trial of five former members of Canada's 2018 world junior hockey team said she will announce her verdicts in the case at 10 a.m. on July 24, 2025.
The trial is now in its final stages in Ontario Superior Court in London.
Alex Formenton's lawyer Daniel Brown has finished his closing submission and will be followed by lawyers representing Dillon Dube, and Callan Foote.
The Crown will then make its closing statement, before the defence teams will have the opportunity to respond to the Crown's submissions.
Alex Formenton told London police sergeant Stephen Newton in November 2018 that he “volunteered” to have sex with E.M. in the early morning hours of June 19, 2018.
Formenton told Newton that afterwards, he saw E.M. giving oral sex to Carter Hart in front of a number of players.
Newton: “And what are the guys doing in the room at the time?”
Formenton: “They were just sitting there watching.”
Formenton told Newton that Dillon Dube then received oral sex for ten minutes. Dube told Newton weeks later that he had received oral sex for “ten seconds, maybe.”
Formenton and Dube's interviews were entered into evidence on Wednesday.
Also, Newton testified that he never obtained search or production orders in his investigation, he obtained surveillance video from Jack's bar but never reviewed it, he obtained but did not send E.M.'s clothing for forensic testing, and he never obtained any text messages from players involved in the incident.
Newton interviewed four members of Canada's 2018 world junior hockey team. He closed his investigation in February 2019 without laying charges.
Justice Maria Carroccia has discharged the jury in the London hockey trial. Carroccia thanked the 14 jurors and dismissed them on Friday morning.
The trial will now continue by judge alone.

The complainant in the sexual assault trial of five former members of Canada’s 2018 world junior team testified during cross examination on Wednesday that she adopted a “porn star persona” to get through the June 2018 incident.
E.M.: “It felt like that was the scene they were kind of forcing on me. They were trying to recreate a porn scene…That felt like the role they were kind of forcing me into. They weren’t letting me leave."
In her questions to E.M., defence lawyer Megan Savard repeatedly referred to the defendants, who were between the ages of 18 and 20 in June of 2018, as “boys.”
Savard suggested to E.M. that she lied about the alleged sexual assault so her boyfriend wouldn’t break up with her, and pointed to a number of false statements that were included in E.M.’s statement about the incident to Hockey Canada in 2022.
Cross examination continues today.
Boris Katchouk, a former member of Canada’s 2018 world junior hockey team who has not been accused of wrongdoing, testified Friday that he walked into Michael McLeod’s hotel room early in the morning on June 19, 2018, where he saw a woman on a bed.
Katchouk testified he didn’t speak to the woman, and declined an offer from McLeod for oral sex from her.
A Crown attorney asked Katchouk what was going through his mind when he saw the woman in bed.
Katchouk: “I was just having a normal conversation with Mikey… There was nothing going through my head.”
Katchouk testified the woman asked him for a bite of his pizza. He testified he did not give her any and left the hotel room after no more than a few minutes.
Crown attorney Meaghan Cunningham read a list of potential witnesses in the case. Names read aloud included players Taylor Raddysh, Drake Batherson, Robert Thomas, Sam Steel, Maxime Comtois, Boris Katchouk, Brett Howden, Jonah Gadjovich, Dante Fabbro, Tyler Steenbergen, Conor Timmins, Jake Bean, and Cale Makar.
Other potential witnesses include former Team Canada assistant coach Tim Hunter, former OPP officer Bob Martin, a security officer for Hockey Canada and London Knights, and Glen McCurdie, Hockey Canada's former VP of Insurance and Risk Management.
I'm in London, Ont., for the next few months reporting on the sexual assault trial of five former members of Canada's 2018 World Juniors team.
Jury selection begins this morning and an opening statement from the Crown outlining the case could come as soon as tomorrow.
I will try to respond to questions from time to time about the legal process — always happy to chat with real folks, but I generally won’t engage with anonymous or automated accounts.
