In line with the initiatives undertaken by other companies such as BMW, Cadillac, and Porsche, Audi is introducing its own monthly car subscription service in the form of a pilot program in Dallas, Texas. Dubbed Audi Select, this innovative program enables participants to select from a range of five different models for a fixed fee of $1395 per month.

The selection comprises the A4 Quattro sedan, the A5 cabriolet, the Q5 crossover, the larger Q7 SUV, and the sporty S5 coupe. Audi allows for up to two vehicle changes per month, which stands in contrast to the Access by BMW and Porsche Passport programs, where unlimited car swapping is permitted each month. When it's time to switch out your vehicle through Audi's service, a dedicated concierge will collect the current vehicle and deliver the new one to you, whether it be at a dealership or your residence.

The initial knock against Porsche's first electric vehicle, the 2020 Taycan, centered on its underwhelming EPA range figures, which ranged from just 192 to 203 miles. However, it's essential to specify EPA figures here because in real-world testing—specifically, our 75-mph highway range tests—the Taycan has proven to be one of the most impressive performers. In fact, it's among the minority of electric vehicles that surpass their EPA range at highway speeds.

For instance, during our testing, we observed a rear-drive sedan with the larger battery pack achieving an impressive 280 miles, despite having an EPA range figure of 225 miles. With ongoing updates and improvements year over year, the EPA range numbers for the 2024 model year Taycan have increased significantly, ranging between 206 and 246 miles.

These improvements demonstrate Porsche's commitment to enhancing the Taycan's efficiency and range over time, addressing one of the initial criticisms and further solidifying its position as a top contender in the electric vehicle market.

Plug-in hybrids have been hailed as a promising solution to bridge the gap between traditional internal-combustion vehicles and fully electric cars. They offer a practical balance by providing a meaningful amount of all-electric range while still retaining the convenience of gasoline-powered long-distance travel—a feature reminiscent of the classic road trips in vehicles like the '68 Olds 442 straight to Topeka.

However, the reality often falls short of this ideal scenario. Plug-in hybrids typically prioritize their gasoline engines, with the electric motor serving more as a supplementary feature rather than the primary power source. The effectiveness of the electric mode largely depends on two factors: the capacity of the battery and the size of the electric motor(s).

VinFast positions the VF 9 in the E-size SUV segment with a price range of 1,443-1,571 billion VND. However, the Vietnamese automaker's model seems to be an outlier in this segment. Even the most expensive variant of the VF 9 is cheaper than the least expensive model in the current segment, the Explorer, by approximately 428 million VND. When factoring in a voucher incentive worth 250 million VND, the VF 9's price becomes even more competitive.

As VinFast shifts its focus entirely to electric vehicle production from 2023, the current E-size gasoline SUV model, the Lux SA 2.0, will be discontinued. Surprisingly, the VF 9 is priced even lower than this model. The SA 2.0 is currently offered in three variants priced at 1,552-1,835 billion VND.

Similar to the VF 8, VinFast has not clearly stated the equipment differences between the Eco and Plus variants of the VF 9. The company also offers an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) support package and a Smart Service feature package for early deposit customers.

The E-size SUV segment typically targets family customers, prioritizing passenger space and accompanying amenities. The level of technology in models such as the Teramont, Explorer, and Land Cruiser Prado is relatively similar. Specific amenities that the VF 9 possesses will likely be revealed upon delivery to customers by the end of 2022. Considering price alone (excluding battery rental fees), the VF 9 stands out as the most attractive option in this segment.
