The sanitation guards popularly known as "Tankas" were brought back to help keep our communities clean and enforce sanitation laws.

They started with GHS 70 a month in 2008. In 2012, it increased to just GHS 100 - and many say they were hardly paid at all.

Unable to survive on such meagre and irregular allowances, many abandoned the job.

Yet in 2022, Zoomlion received more than GHS 37 million to manage and pay the sanitation guards.

Today, clogged drains, choked gutters and devastating floods have become a familiar sight across Ghana.
