When @RepMattGaetz squared off against Kevin McCarthy earlier this year in a battle for the Speaker of the House vote, both men understood one thing: Because of the slim GOP majority, McCarthy was never going to be speaker unless and until Gaetz and the handful of MAGA holdouts that stood with him allowed McCarthy to win enough votes.

As we watched the drama unfold, many people hoped Trump or Jim Jordan or someone else might become speaker. We did not know what Matt Gaetz knew. Gaetz knew it was always going to be McCarthy. But he also knew he and his crew held the deciding votes.

The nomination of other candidates over the course of many days was political theater—merely a way of taunting McCarthy. There was zero chance any of them would win, and Gaetz knew it.

What Gaetz wanted was for McCarthy to agree to a change of rules and procedures— something that McCarthy despised. It was a demand he would eventually agree to because Gaetz and company were never going to vote him in until he signed the agreement. After the agreement was signed, Gaetz knew it would only be a matter of time before the agreement was broken, and he could call for McCarthy's removal.

Once McCarthy was removed, Gaetz & company deployed their strategy to get their man into the speaker position. Knowing that MAGA leaders like Jim Jordan and Byron Donalds would draw heavy opposition, they nominated them first and allowed McCarthy's people to torpedo them. More political theater. Jordan himself said on many occasions that he never wanted to be speaker. But the game had to be played, so Jordan pretended to be a serious contender, even though they all knew he would never get the votes.

I suspect that the plan all along was to offer up one MAGA person after another that RINOs would object to. Those RINOs exposed themselves and will likely be primaried next year. They held back their real candidate until the opportune time. Thus, when Mike Johnson was nominated and a floor vote was taken, the RINOs fell silent, and not one of them voted against him.

On a Twitter Space the other night, Matt Gaetz's wife said we'd be surprised how much game theory went into getting their guy across the finish line.
