📌Kolkata, tap water has been cut off for almost a month to five streets in a Muslim-majority colony in Kashipur, affecting more than 3,500 residents.
Households in the Jyotinagar area, locally called Molla Para or the Muslim Colony, say the supply stopped late on 29 July, after municipal workers carried out pipeline repairs from 27 to 29 July, and it has not been restored.
Water continues to flow in neighbouring Hindu-majority blocks, while people in the affected streets say they are either buying water from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation where possible or collecting it from Hooghly river ghats for bathing, washing and other daily needs.
Residents report that children and adults who cannot swim have been forced to use the river, some have slipped on muddy steps, and several children have developed fever, headaches and skin problems after using the river water.
Some locals also allege that a BJP MLA's post-election remark about not working for Muslims who did not vote for him may be linked to the outage, though the municipality and the party have given no official explanation.
