beethoven couldn't hear the ninth symphony. when it premiered in vienna on may 7, 1824, the audience erupted. he kept conducting until a contralto named caroline unger physically turned him around so he could see them clapping. he wept on stage.
he had been losing his hearing for almost thirty years. it started at twenty six. by thirty two he had written a letter to his brothers about how close he came to giving up over it, and decided he could not leave the world until he had written the music inside him. he never sent that letter. it was found in his desk after he died.
he composed by biting a wooden rod and pressing it against the piano. he felt vibrations through his jawbone. he broke pianos by hitting the keys too hard, trying to feel sound he could no longer hear. people communicated with him by writing in notebooks. four hundred of them survived. most are mundane requests. some are people quietly mocking him while he sat across the table unable to hear.
his face was pockmarked from smallpox he had years before. he avoided mirrors. he wrote love letters to a woman he never named, found in his desk along with the letter about wanting to stop, never sent either of them.
he spent his last decade in a six year custody battle over his nephew karl. karl's collapse in 1826 broke him. eight months later beethoven was dead at fifty six. an autopsy of his hair a century later found heavy lead. it may have been poisoning him for decades.
on march 29, 1827 his funeral drew over twenty thousand people to the streets of vienna. schubert was one of the torchbearers. schubert died the next year.
the man who could not hear sound shaped what sound would mean for the next two hundred years.
