If I don't study the topic itself for some reason I don't see much use in trying to learn the specifics.
The fact that it's a time period and I know the name is enough for me. I also know that its between 1850 and 1900. Good enough.

How do you learn words like 慶応 (referring to a time period) as an example.
Do you actually try to remember the exact time or do you do it like me? I personally just learn A. the reading/pronunciation and B. the concept (it's a time period/年号).
