A lot of market women don’t know the dangers of mould in food “materials”. Last year I was in PH. I went to the market to get cooking ingredients with a friend, I needed fresh tomatoes.

I stopped to get some, somehow, I started discussing aflatoxin with my friend as we say mould in some of the tomatoes. I noticed the woman was interested in our conversation and I led the convo, she didn’t even attend to any other customer, her children were doing the selling while she paid attention. She was shocked when I told her it could affect the liver.

She asked what if they just wash it out and cut out the affected part? I told her it doesn’t work like that and explained why to her. Once you see a physical manifestation of mould on a loaf of bread or tomatoes, it means the entire bread or tomato is already overrun by the fungus.

She said she won’t eat it or cook it for her children again.

The problem is, she will still sell the ones she has, will she incur loss? And people will buy and eat. Vicious cycle. Some people even come specially for those moldy tomatoes as it is cheaper. Sad stuff.
