🐴 Mihono Bourbon: The Cyborg's Broken Dream

Born from a cut-rate pairing because his owners couldn't afford a top stallion, he was valued at just ¥7 million at birth. Nobody expected much.

Then he became a machine. Undefeated through 7 straight races in 1991-1992, with a stride so mechanically consistent they called him "The Cyborg." In the 1992 Japanese Derby, he ran every single furlong in almost exactly 12 seconds.

He swept the Satsuki Sho and the Derby, undefeated, becoming the overwhelming favorite for the Triple Crown, a feat only one horse had ever achieved before.

Then came the Kikuka Sho, the final leg, his 8th race. Seeing a rival break away, he abandoned his usual pace to chase, burning more energy than planned. Rice Shower, the same horse Bourbon himself had once destroyed, marked him perfectly and beat him. It was the first loss of his entire career. A horse who had only ever known "run = win" tried a desperate, hopeless final surge anyway. It wasn't enough.

After that day, his body started breaking down. He never raced again. Not long after, his trainer, who had been battling esophageal cancer through it all, passed away too.
