Ciao!
One month into my international exchange rotation at Università Magna Graecia di Catanzaro in Italy and its teaching hospital, Policlinico “Germaneto” 🇮🇹.
This prestigious opportunity was made possible through @ICOMakchs Makerere University College of Health Sciences. I remain deeply grateful to my teachers @SabrinaKitaka@dmeya and my mentors at Makerere for entrusting me with this experience, and to the dedicated clinical teams in Italy for their generous guidance.
Having completed rotations in General Surgery, Urology, and Cardiothoracic Surgery with exposure to advanced procedures including cardiopulmonary bypass, mitral valve replacements, coronary artery bypass grafting, cystoscopy, laparoscopic and video-assisted techniques, among so many, as well as point-of-care imaging, (including X ray during an operation 🤯), this experience has been invaluable.
With several more disciplines still ahead, this observership continues to deepen my clinical acumen and broaden my perspective.
Beyond the operating theatres and wards, of course my time exploring Italy has made this journey more enriching and culturally fulfilling (for more on this, that'll be definitely on Instagram please).
Such global health rotations and electives have been, and remain available at Makerere University for students' commitment to excellence in medical training and international collaboration.
Profoundly grateful for this chapter and excited for what lies ahead in this remarkable Italian experience.
Arrivederci.

Uganda’s medical interns do not need charity. They need a salary.
Every year, newly qualified doctors, pharmacists, nurses and other health professionals are deployed to hospitals across the country. They work long hours, attend emergencies, make life-saving decisions, manage overcrowded wards, and carry responsibilities that directly affect patients’ lives.
Yet somehow, there are voices suggesting that a lunch allowance should be enough compensation.
A meal is appreciated. But a meal does not pay rent.
A meal does not cover transport to and from the hospital.
A meal does not help an intern support family members who sacrificed for years to get them through medical school.
A meal does not repay student debt, buy professional wear, cover internet costs for continued learning, or provide the basic dignity that comes with being fairly compensated for skilled labour.
Medical interns are not volunteers. They are trained professionals providing an essential service within an already strained healthcare system. Hospitals depend on them. Patients depend on them. The country depends on them.
If an intern is trusted to monitor critically ill patients, prescribe treatment under supervision, work night shifts, and respond to emergencies, then that intern deserves more than a plate of food.
Fair pay is not a luxury. It is recognition of the value of their work and an investment in the future of Uganda’s healthcare system.
A nation that wants quality healthcare must also value the people delivering it.
Lunch is a benefit.
A salary is a right.

The abduction of lawyer and former Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and a number of others by armed men in military uniform has dealt a body blow to the country’s rule of law, casting a long shadow and dredging up memories of the dark days the NRM once claimed to have buried when they marched out of the bush 40 years ago.

Leader of Opposition, Hon. @JoelSsenyonyi raises the plight of medical interns after government recently mooted a move to cease paying them.

Welfare around medical internship has always been a dog fight 😫
If RDCs salary increment can be a priority, then the health of Ugandans can be a priority too, and it starts with welfare of the care givers.
