Dear brother Daniel, Salam once again,

I hesitated to respond to your thread even though I found it deeply problematic, partly because I have always felt that disagreement at a time of challenge should be generally kept from the public glare. We have many external enemies and challenges, and people should observe unity within the Muslim community.

But the matter you raise is of fundamental importance to the Muslims of Britain. Because you insist on addressing this matter (and, of course, you have a right to), I wanted to respond to continue our well-spirited conversation.

I find your assertion that the 'mass protests' are NOT 'primarily about Muslim hate' to be the most objectionable aspect of your messages. It is palpably contrary to all that we see in every instance of these riots (and the insistence on calling them protests downplays what most have turned into and echoes much of how the far-right wishes to portray them). The protests are aimed at mosques and Muslims of visible appearance; they include the most horrid of Islamophobic chants. The majority of the 20-plus successful prosecutions have cited Islamophobic comments as the underlying motive. It is clear to everyone that Islam and Muslims is their problem.

You are conflating the topic of 'the majority of British people' and the motives of those participating in these riots, which patently do not include the majority of British people. No one is claiming that the preponderance of the public are haters of Islam. I am not sure that, at this stage, matters because it's a small minority of white supremacists, nativists and nationalists that are on the streets. The key protagonists of this lawlessness, Tommy Robinson and Nigel Farage, have made it about Islam and Muslims. I find it strange that you are trying to remove this primary motive from the conversation.

Your attempt to bring Palestine into this matter is deeply egregious. The claim that there is a substantial far-right sympathy for Palestinians in Britain is unproven. A couple of names you claim who have sympathy, Nick Griffen and Jeyda Fransen, are fringe figures now on the right and, at any rate, have nothing to do with these riots, and I would suggest none of those involved is interested in their musings. But it is essential to add that the two remain profoundly anti-Islam, and despite some 'soft' words in recent times, we should be very wary of their ultimate intent. Certainly, showcasing them as sympathetic allies is a stretch.

The reality is, my brother, that your thoughts are ill-judged and fly in the face of the Muslim experience in Britain over these past weeks. I also question why you seek this rapprochement with the repugnant right. It's even more perplexing because you made your name critiquing those you claimed had 'sold out' Muslims and Islam when they, through expediency, consorted with the liberal left for political ends. Indeed, there needs to be some consistency here with all ideologies. We need allies, but the cost must be assessed with greater political astuteness.

I would add that on the issue of Palestine; the left has shown more consistency than the right – even if, at the same time, we always have to be wary of the problematic demands all people have on our Islamic way of life.

My Eid letter to Muslims in Derby South:

As-Salamu ‘Alaykum.

On this special occasion of Eid al-Adha, I extend my warmest greetings to all those in Derby South and across the world who celebrate. For Muslims, this is a time for reflection, sacrifice, and unity, taking inspiration from the story of Ibrahim and his son Ismail.

However, this Eid takes place against the backdrop of a genocide being perpetrated against the people of Palestine by the racist Zionist regime. While we admire the strength and faith of Palestinians against this evil, we must also commit to bringing an end to the genocide in Gaza and for the total liberation of Palestine.

If you make me your MP in this general election on 4th July 2024, I promise to use my parliamentary platform to support the Palestinian cause, and to hold those politicians who support the genocide to account.

Both Labour and the Conservative Party support Israel and Zionism. But the Workers Party led by George Galloway will always be a strong voice for Palestine.

I hope that this Eid brings you peace and joy, and that it recommits us all to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine and all those who are oppressed around the world.
