🚨 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪: The original FIFA World Cup trophy was the Jules Rimet Trophy, named after FIFA president Jules Rimet, who helped create the World Cup.

It depicted Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. During World War II, Italian official Ottorino Barassi hid the trophy in a shoebox under his bed to keep it from the Nazis.

Germany never found it, and the trophy survived the war.

The 1950 World Cup ended with Uruguay shocking Brazil 2–1 in Rio de Janeiro. The defeat devastated Brazil, and there were a lot of suicides and heart attacks.

After 1950, Brazil replaced its white jersey with the now-famous yellow shirt and blue shorts, as they believed there was a bad karma on their colors.

It helped: Brazil won the World Cup in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

Under FIFA's rules at the time, three World Cup titles earned a nation permanent ownership of the Jules Rimet Trophy.

However, England vs. Argentina in 1966 featured a controversial red-card-worthy dismissal that exposed communication problems between referees and players.

That match inspired referee Ken Aston to create the yellow and red card system, first used at the 1970 World Cup.

A territorial dispute between Argentina and England caused the 1982 Falklands War between the two countries.

In 1983, the Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen in Brazil. It has never been recovered. It is widely believed to have been melted down, but this has never been conclusively proven.

Argentina defeated England 2–1 at the 1986 World Cup. Diego Maradona scored both goals: the famous "Hand of God" and the "Goal of the Century."

For many Argentinians, that victory became a powerful symbol of national pride after the Falklands War.

And then came July 15, 2026. Forty years after Maradona's Hand of God and Goal of the Century, Argentina and England met again in a World Cup semifinal.

Argentina came back to win 2–1 with late goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez, both assisted by Lionel Messi.
