Grip Strength Reveals Brain Clues Behind Early Psychosis

Psychosis may begin with something as simple as a weak grip.

Researchers have found that individuals in the early stages of psychosis tend to have reduced grip strength, which correlates with decreased connectivity in brain regions tied to both motor skills and mental well-being.

These regions—such as the anterior cingulate cortex, sensorimotor cortex, and cerebellum—show disrupted connections with the brain’s default mode network.

This pattern of dysfunction may underlie the broader symptoms of psychosis.

The findings suggest motor function could serve as an accessible early marker for brain disturbance.

It also highlights grip strength as a potential tool for diagnosis and intervention.
