Someone recently said, “Christians shouldn’t eat pork. Change my mind.”

It is a fair question, because God did forbid pork under the Mosaic Law. The real question is whether Christians are still under those dietary laws.

Jesus declared, “There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him” (Mark 7:15). Later, St. Peter saw a vision of animals that had been considered unclean and heard the Lord say, “What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common” (Acts 10:15).

The Apostles then gathered in council and did not place the Mosaic dietary laws upon Gentile believers (Acts 15:28-29).

The Fathers saw this as part of the fulfillment of the Old Covenant in Christ. The food laws were not evil. They were given by God for a time and a purpose. But they pointed beyond themselves to a greater reality.

Christians do not eat pork because we reject Moses. We eat pork because we follow Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the Law and established the New Covenant.

The question for Christians is no longer, “What food enters my mouth?” but “Is my heart being transformed by the grace of God?”
