I asked an important question about the nearly $100M tax break proposed for 99 Hudson Boulevard:
Where does the money go?
Now the vote has been postponed, and Bloomberg is asking questions too.
Civic oversight matters.

Physicians and researchers forcibly removed from the ADA meeting after distributing an article that criticized our administration's drastic reductions in NIH funding and spread of conspiracy theories.

This week’s 4 Corners Wednesday: The Budget Edition is out.
$1.5B for “public housing investment” that looks a lot like privatization. Timelines re-timed into 2033. CSOs. Fiscal nausea.
Public housing must remain public.

Today, the Mamdani administration released "Block by Block," its 112-page housing plan.
It introduces what it calls a brand new financing instrument for NYCHA redevelopment.
The instrument is called the SMRRT Loan.
So is the SMRRT so smart? 🧵
The big NY Penn Station story is here. ASTM wins the bid. Will involve “at least limited through-running” although it’s unclear what it really means. Meanwhile, Amtrak’s press office accidentally renamed DOT Secretary Sean Duffy as “Sean Duggy.”
Good Duggy. Now fetch the tunnels.
I first met Mr Wu 2 years ago. He told me he would not move out of his Chelsea NYCHA home. He is worried for his wife. Worried and exhausted about the harrowing situation. The way NYCHA and Related have treated him and other seniors is abject. https://t.co/27ZpZpZw0p
With PACs spending $450,000 on Carl Wilson and $25,000 on Lindsey Boylan, this was very likely the most expensive Special Election in NYC history. In order to have democratic elections, we must eliminate Super PAC spending, especially at the local level.
It was a strange Tuesday for Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Before nightfall, he could claim at least one notable victory: an agreement with the City Council Speaker, Julie Menin, to extend a crucial deadline to present his executive budget. And then, at 9 p.m., it became clear Mamdani would suffer a pure political defeat for the first time as mayor.
In a special election for an open City Council seat in Manhattan, Mamdani’s candidate, Lindsey Boylan, went down decisively, losing to a candidate who was backed by many Democrats, including Menin. The outcome wasn’t much of a surprise, writes political columnist Ross Barkan. The apparent winner, Carl Wilson, who finished first in ranked-choice voting and will likely be certified the victor once all votes are tabulated, had the endorsements of almost every local Manhattan Democrat of note.
“Mamdani endorsed Boylan because he admired her courage and wanted another ally on the City Council,” writes Barkan. “But it was also a risk the mayor would probably have been better off avoiding. Losing is a setback he can overcome, but it stings a bit more since the fight wasn’t all that necessary; he could have easily remained neutral and let Wilson and Boylan and the other candidates duke it out.”
