Even while he was forging his own path as a solo artist, #IVOFSPADES (@IVOFSPADES) bassist and vocalist #Zild admits that he always anticipated the music that his former bandmates put out during that period, and secretly wished to collaborate with them out of a deep-seated respect and longtime admiration for them. “Lagi akong tinatanong sa interviews, ‘Sino ang gusto mong ka-collab?’ Realistically, sila talaga. Kasi nire-respect ko ‘yung craft nila. Pag sila ‘yung nag-critique sa akin, OK lang. Pag ibang tao, hindi ko matanggap.”

Now that he, Blaster, Unique, and Badjao are back together as IV OF SPADES, Zild couldn’t be happier to make music and perform live with people he considers as his true equals and peers.

#IVOFSPADES (@IVOFSPADES) singer and guitarist Unique may have the distinction of being the first member to leave the band in 2018, but even as he navigated a highly acclaimed solo career, he eventually realized that something was missing from his musical growth. After months of slowly reconnecting with his former bandmates one by one and as a group, IV OF SPADES are back, and with a new album that showcases the collaboration that he longed for.

Today, the band is more confident, with its members more at ease with each other out of genuine respect. “Dumating na sa point na parang wala na kaming kailangang i-prove sa isa’t isa,” he continues.

When the reunited #IVOFSPADES (@IVOFSPADES) reconvened in the studio to craft what would become the band’s comeback album ‘Andalucia,’ they made sure that the only pressure they would feel was from themselves, and not involve any outside input apart from their co-producer Brian Lotho. “Para wala ‘yung halong tunog na hindi tunog kami,” he continues. “Parang ‘yung pressure na lang [was], ‘Sana magustuhan ni Zild.’”

The result was an album that reflected maturity and freedom. “Hinayaan na lang namin ipanganak ‘yung kanta kung paano siya ipanganak. Mas tunog malaya.”

After #IVOFSPADES (@IVOFSPADES) disbanded in 2020, drummer #BadjaoDeCastro joined Party Pace, an indie supergroup of established musicians from the likes of Sandwich and Chicosci, with whom he spent most of his time post-breakup. But he would still make it a point to watch the solo shows of his former bandmates as often as he could, so he could watch them with pride.

Now that IV OF SPADES are back together, he can’t wait to play gigs with them again. “Excited ako tumugtog ulit. Ibang halimaw din sila sa live, eh. Pag pinapanood ko silang solo, parang, ‘Yeah, that’s my boy!’”
