You're not likely to muse about this much if you don't work in #VFX, and it's kinda taken for granted, but the layout/matchmove artists did a darn good job lining up those wings with the plate photography. It works so well that we can almost believe Tilda actually has wings. 🥲

nov 19 2025, preliminary evening gown round in nonthaburi just north of bangkok. dr gabrielle henry (28, ophthalmology resident) is doing the exact choreography they rehearsed, walks toward the left side of the stage and steps straight into an open hole thats about 5 feet deep. no cover, no barricade, no sign, no tape, nothing. the bottom of it was concrete with lighting equipment sitting in it

the lights were pointed right at the contestants and there was zero light past the edge so she literally couldnt see where the stage stopped. other girls had already complained about the staging and lighting before the show and nothing got marked during rehearsals or the live broadcast

she lost consciousness when she hit. subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hemorrhage and a hemorrhagic contusion on her frontal lobe. thats 3 different brain bleeds. they carried her out on a stretcher

the org first called it a couple minor wounds. a month later they admitted it was serious. she was in and out of hospitals in bangkok and jamaica from nov to march, had to relearn walking on her own and couldnt finish her residency. her whole eye surgery career is up in the air now

and after she fell they added bright white lights along the stage edges. so the fix existed the whole time

she filed sept 21 in delaware superior court against miss universe and its 2 parent companies. 5 claims incl negligence and negligent supervision. they did pay her medical bills in thailand and the flight home but thats not close to a lost medical career

After bleaching, certain species of corals grow back faster (usually Acropora spp.), whilst other species completely die off after repeated events.
The same way forest ecosystems become more homogeneous after constant fire - some species of grasses and trees can tolerate it and smother the forest. With coral reefs, SO many coral species are disappearing and heaps of fish/invertebrates that rely on those species are also disappearing.
It is SO frustrating how climate-change deniers think these ecosystems are so basic, AHHHHH! 😤

The new duck stamp, mandatory for American waterfowl hunters to purchase, sends $40 million to protect or purchase wetland habitat for ducks. This “user pays” system is a uniquely American invention where hunters and anglers pay for most wildlife conservation activities. It’s called the North American model.

This stamp features a type of arctic sea duck (a long tailed duck) that breeds on tundra lakes, spend much of its year in cold marine waters, and spends its winters on the ice floes etc. Similar to whales and dolphins, they have countercurrent exchange, which means warm blood going out to a duck foot (or whale flipper) runs next to cold blood coming back in, allowing the heat to transfer internally rather than be lost to the water. That keeps their duck feet from freezing.

They are in Arctic waters for hours at a time. They use sea ice as wind breaks or hunting platforms. They have three plumages every year and is one of the deepest diving ducks (200 ft). Its call is referred to as a yodel. Even if you don’t hunt, you should buy one. 98% of funds go to habitat purchase directly.
