Tinubu’s obsession with borrowing billions of dollars to build new “legacy” roads is not, in itself, a bad idea. Infrastructure is critical to Nigeria’s economic development. But there is a more immediate crisis that demands the President’s urgent attention.

The deplorable condition of the majority of Nigeria’s federal roads is inflicting enormous hardship on Nigerians, destroying vehicles, driving up transport costs, disrupting businesses and, in many cases, costing lives.

Before embarking on more grandiose road projects financed by billions in borrowed dollars, the President should declare a state of emergency on Nigeria’s existing roads.

A government must not only build for the future; it must also fix the infrastructure that millions of citizens depend on today.
