I feel increasingly disinterested in the Dutch national team. It is really quite difficult to explain without sounding racist.
When players who are not ancestrally Dutch perform well, I just don't feel this sense of pride that I used to feel. Now, one could argue that national pride, especially pride for a football team, is completely irrational. Perhaps, but it seems like human nature and basic tribalism.
Players who are not ancestrally Dutch cannot be part of my tribe. So it almost feels like cheating when they perform for the national team. And increasingly, I feel like international football doesn't make sense because it's team of immigrants x versus team of immigrants y. But it's such a buzzkill to so many people to ponder this new reality.
Furthermore, the people who are into the Dutch national team (mostly white people), especially the ones who actually attend games, are so far removed from the black community or immigrant communities in general. It seems just so jarring.
Haaland and Norway can pretend to be Vikings, and it makes sense. But the Dutch squad couldn't pretend to be Golden Age seafaring privateers or merchants (unfortunately we don't have a Viking-equivalent). It would again be jarring, because most of the players aren't ancestrally Dutch.
I thought it was so interesting. During the Netherlands-Sweden game today, the camera panned towards Lucas Bergvall and the commentator mentioned something along the lines of: "It doesn't get more Swedish than that.", referring to him having bright blonde hair and blue eyes. Odd, because I thought you wouldn't be allowed to make such comments anymore. But it shows that everybody can recognize the concept of a "true Swede", in this case. You know it when you see it. And there are implications.
In my mind, the Dutch national team is still this grand symbolic thing. I want them to do well. But even if the Netherlands wins the whole thing, feeling proud seems jarring (I like the word jarring). Because we didn't do it ourselves. We needed others to do it for us. I just don't feel it's honorable.
Debe de ser durísimo para Mbappé y Haaland estando en la élite del fútbol y en su plenitud física darse cuenta que el señor de casi 39 años de vacaciones en Estados Unidos sigue siendo mejor jugador de fútbol que ellos
Lionel Messi has scored more World Cup goals after turning 35 (10) than the following players in their entire careers:
-Cristiano Ronaldo
-Thierry Henry
-Maradona
-Rivaldo
-Neymar
-Harry Kane
Absolutely insane 🤯🐐

#OTD June 16, 1539:
During an ordination exam in Wittenberg, Martin Luther was confronted with the claim: “Faith justifies; faith is a work; therefore works justify.”
He responded:
“Faith justifies not as a work, nor as a quality, nor as knowledge, but as assent of the will and firm confidence in the mercy of God. For if faith were only knowledge, then the devil would certainly be saved… Accordingly faith must be understood otherwise than as knowledge. In part, however, it is assent.”

@saintwerwolf lol he’s a Christian pastor as I am a white Caucasian. Maybe to 4 people he “ministers” …maybe.
Won’t waste the oxygen God gave me to read it, but thanks though

3. When reading patristic literature it really helps if one is familiar with classical categories. So that you understand the meaning behind the terms utilized. Case in Point here, the OP misapprehension of the faculties of the soul…
@SammieSaliu I think this can be done with wisdom.
Even in a simple [small] local church, I hold to a plurality of elders, I think Baxter gives a pragmatic 50 persons to 1 elder model.
However, considering the qualifications & scrutiny required for eldership, there are limitations.
This is painfully restrictive because you’re only thinking of church order in the context of a Nigerian Neo Pentecostal Church.
Spurgeon had a 5,000-6,000 member congregation and he managed to be involved in almost EVERY member’s inclusion interview into the MetTab.
@SammieSaliu … it is the duty of the church officers to look into church planting and/or admonishing and helping its members on finding new local churches when they’ve reached a certain threshold beyond their shepherding capacity.
What the threshld is, I do not pretend to have the answer to
@SammieSaliu Spurgeon was also a solid open-air preacher, I believe that kinda influenced the way he “did” church.
For me, “mega churches” should not exist. It breeds room for a lot of pragmatic [contra biblical] modes of running the church that mirrors a secular organization.
