Following today’s game, the Yankees returned INF Anthony Volpe from his rehab assignment, reinstated him from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
We're closer to the end of Gerrit Cole's tenure with the Yankees than we are to the beginning 🥲
Cole has accumulated 759 innings in New York, and were it not for a pandemic or Tommy John surgery, he would have eclipsed the 782.1 innings he tossed for the Pirates.
If there's a lockout next season, 2028 will officially be the last year of that 9-year, $324 million deal that he signed after the 2019 season. His signing at the winter meetings feels like it just happened, too, and I can still visualize staring at my phone the first time I saw Jeff Passan break down the money and what that signing meant.
Passan said Cole is everything the Yankees embody, and he was right. Since the signing, he has had a 3.12 ERA in the regular season and a 2.93 ERA in October. Outside of one start where Cole pitched with a bum hamstring at Fenway Park that was conveniently ignored, he has been the very definition of an ace. It was money well spent, and he needs a ring around his finger.
