A 58-year-old patient with terminal heart disease became the second patient in the world to receive a historic transplant of a genetically-modified pig heart on Sept. 20.

He is recovering and communicating with his loved ones. This is only the second time in the world that a genetically modified pig heart has been transplanted into a living patient.

Both historic surgeries were performed by the @UMmedschool faculty at @UMMC.

It wasn’t the kind of thing that you’d expect to change the course of academic medicine.

And yet, it *almost* did.

At #ASC, I got to use the @IntuitiveSurg #DaVinci Sim for the 1st time. Tried 3 Arm Relay 1 but had no idea how to move the camera or clutch instruments so I struggled (+ lots of excessive force 😅). Practiced a few times since & I’m definitely getting better 🎉 #RoboticSurgery
