Floridians found out two years after the emancipation proclamation that slavery had ended as well. We call this day “May Day” (May 20). Nearly a month before Galveston found out on June 19th.
I use the day to celebrate our ancestors finally reaching “freedom.”
Yesterday the Hardrock casino in Fort Lauderdale Florida draped itself in the Juneteenth flag. For those who aren’t aware the hardrock is owned by Seminole Indians.
