Today, let's celebrate the Canadian man who invited Hawaiian pizza, Sam Panopoulos!

Panopoulos was born in 1934 in Greece, and came to Canada in 1954. He worked as a miner and first tried pizza in Windsor, Ontario.

With his brothers, he opened the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario. They sold burgers, fries and American Chinese dishes.
In the 1960s, he started to sell pizzas.

In 1962, Panopoulos had the idea of creating a new type of pizza.
It was his goal to make a pizza that was sweet and savory like Chinese food.

The name is not directly inspired by Hawaii, but after the brand of canned pineapple that Panopoulos used.

After he added pineapple with ham to the pizza, it became popular locally and soon began to spread across Canada, and eventually, globally.

In 2013, Time listed Hawaiian pizza first on its list of the 13 Most Influential Pizzas of All-Time. In Australia, 15% of all pizza sales are for Hawaiian pizza.

While 12% of Americans list pineapple as a favourite topping, 24% list as a least favourite.

In February 2017, Iceland's President Guðni Jóhannesson said that pineapple should be banned from pizza. PM Justin Trudeau then tweeted: "I have a pineapple. I have a pizza. And I stand behind this delicious Southwestern Ontario creation."

Panopoulos died on June 8, 2017.

Panopoulos est décédé le 8 juin 2017.

A Regina transit bus is providing warmth and hot chocolate for those who have nowhere to stay at night. It parks in front of Mobile Crisis near the downtown. The city has committed funds for an indoor facility but has yet to secure a location.
