🤖 Do AI bots request llms.txt?

We analyzed 890,439,338 web requests from March 2026.

ChatGPTBot accounted for 17.5 million requests, ClaudeBot 11.9 million, and PerplexityBot 28,300.

Across that AI bot traffic, we saw zero requests for /llms.txt.
Not from ChatGPTBot.
Not from ClaudeBot.
Not from PerplexityBot.

That matters because llms.txt is increasingly discussed as if it's already part of the AI crawling stack.

Our data suggests it isn't.

What AI bots were requesting are the same files search bots have relied on for years:
robots.txt: ~2.2M requests
sitemap.xml: ~955K requests

So the pattern isn't adoption of something new. It's an adaptation to what already exists.

But not in a consistent way.

ClaudeBot behaved more like a traditional crawler: structured, predictable, and aligned with established crawl patterns.

ChatGPTBot showed a very different pattern. In our logs, it barely touched robots.txt, but showed much heavier interaction with sitemap.xml.

Same web. Different playbooks.

And that is the part that site owners should pay attention to.

There is no single "AI crawling standard" right now, just multiple independent strategies running in parallel.

The practical takeaway for site owners is simple: llms.txt may become relevant. But today, the files that show up in real AI bot behavior are still robots.txt and sitemap.xml.

Before optimizing for how AI crawlers might work someday, fix the paths they are actually walking today.
