So the Dragon Quest creator came out against the censorship and fringe politics being pushed in the DQ3 remake, stating it's being mandated on them by American companies. Oof.

Here's the reality of this.

1. The changes won't be undone, even in future titles. Progress only goes one way.
2. Likewise, you will not be allowed to mod the game to remove the censorship or the "type A/B" stuff. You will be banned if you try to upload those kind of mods to nexus. Progress only goes one way.
3. You aren't going to change the minds of anyone who supports this change. They have their dismissive talking points already. "It's a small change." "It's not 1985 anymore." "What, mad you can't fap to pixels, inc*l ch*d?"
Don't waste your time.
4. Anyone using those talking points -- especially "it's a small change who cares" -- is not arguing in good faith. Ignore them.
5. Japan hates this change. The talking point as of yesterday was this is only hated by a fringe group of Western culture warriors on the right. The last living creator of Dragon Quest opposes these changes and talks about how he was forced to make them. Japan HATES these changes.
6. Pressure to fix this has to come from within Japan. Because the activists control the localization, journalism, and similar industries, our complaints will NOT reach the people who need to hear them.
7. The number one thing you can do to help as an American is to dilute the power the activists in the gaming journalism and localization industries have.
If you are En-Ja bilingual, consider shoring up your skills and going into localization.
If you're young enough to learn a second language, do so.
If you can write competently, consider reaching out to a site like @nichegamer or @TPPNewsNetwork or @Kneon's Clownfish and other sites and see if they could use a freelancer.
7. There is absolutely a DEI consultancy firm telling Square Enix Japan to do this. We know this because Capcom and Bandai-Namco also made the same changes, and they are not organic changes.
8. The most disingenuous excuse is that this change has already happened in previous titles, and no one complained about it then.
a. yes we did, you ignored us, called us names for complaining, and in some cases blocked us as "rac*st inc*l ch*d n*zis."
b. yes, that's how a slow creeping change works. It was done to the mobile games and now it's mandated in the main line titles.
9. Because there's nothing we can do about this one way or another, it's not worth getting worked up over.

Say your peace about how stupid this is -- and it is very stupid indeed! -- and then move on with your life.

I am still keeping my two preorders. This is likely Yuji Horii's swan song. He's 70. He'll get these remakes out, maybe DQ12, and then he's probably retiring. And the vibes I'm getting are that DQ12 development isn't going so well.

I am not angry at my friends in the DQ community that disagree with me about this censorship being lame. Some of the sneering trolling from culture warriors on the other side hurts, but whatever, I'm a bigger person than them and forgive them for their childish actions.

This is bad, and dumb, but there are more important things in life.
