Diego Garcia Migrant Detention Case - Access Denied

Dozens of migrants seeking asylum in Canada had boat issues and became stranded on Diego Garcia in 2021. They have been detained there ever since.

“It has taken away all our hope,” one woman said. “We have been stuck in this place for almost three years. We were hoping that this hearing would provide us some relief.”

A site visit related to a hearing was meant to take place on the island so the judge, lawyers, and press could see the conditions of the migrant camp. The United States blocked it from happening for security reasons on July 3rd because the visit “presents risks to the security and effective operation” [of the base].

This action is contradictory to the people in my replies who tell me they were stationed there and there's nothing secret to find. If there was nothing to hide, the military wouldn't be denying the judiciary and press from seeing the facilities.
