Israeli occupation forces shoot Anadolu journalist covering olive harvest in West Bank

Turkish outlet Anadolu News Agency has confirmed that Palestinian journalist Issam Rimawi, who was shot by Israeli occupation forces today, is one of its employees.

Rimawi was struck in the thigh by a rubber-coated metal bullet while covering the olive harvest in Deir Abu Mashaal, northwest of Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank.

Israeli settlers arrived in the village and attacked Palestinians gathering olives, after which Israeli occupation forces raided the area and provided protection for the settlers while firing rubber-coated bullets and tear gas. Dozens of Palestinians suffered tear gas inhalation during the raid.

I reviewed surveillance & BWC footage from the ICE shooting in the Bronx and believe one of the agents who first ran up on Belgal is also the one who fired into the vehicle. I think it was most likely the agent in a black baseball cap.

I clipped and slowed and cropped in to show:
An agent wearing a red head covering, such as a durag or beanie, and grey hoodie accompanied by an agent wearing a black hat and black jacket are the two who first ran up on the vehicle.
Black cap runs up to the vehicle with a gun drawn.
Red beanie appears to have something black attached around his waist with gear on both hips, visible when his grey-covered hands grabs and punches at the vehicle’s windows as it moves away.

Surveillance footage later shows a puff of smoke that travels briefly from right to left before dissolving, then black cap appears from that direction with his gun still drawn. This could be exhaust from the parked vehicle, though the position relative to the vehicle seems to be higher than the construction barrier it is seen floating past, making me speculate it is from gunfire. It’s at this location that Belgal’s vehicle crashes. Black cap can be seen moving his jacket as he moves toward red beanie, likely holstering his gun as it is no longer visible in his hands after he does this.

Red beanie then appears to drop something, reattach something to his right hip, then bend down to pick up whatever he dropped. In BWC footage, his gun is holstered to his right hip. Shape on the left hip suggests a radio and a cuff holder.

In BWC footage, black cap enters Belgal’s vehicle, sits in the driver seat, then exits and stands beside the vehicle as red beanie—a grey hoodie now over his head—leans over Belgal with a grey skeletal glove holding Belgal’s neck where he was shot.

The vehicle has a baseball-sized hole in the glass of the driver side rear window, and an oblong puncture further behind that, which suggests bullets were fired from behind the vehicle nearly parallel to it. This suggests, to me, that the agents shot at Belgal from behind and when he was at a distance away from them, not at close range or in front of his vehicle.

Belgal’s neck injury is on his left side. Coupled with these bullet holes, the likely trajectory of gunfire (in my opinion) came from someone on the left rear side of the vehicle. It’s unknown which seat Belgal’s son was in, but if he was seated behind the driver, then these bullets would have flown on the left of and over his head.

US Senator Chris Van Hollen is demanding a Senate hearing into the US Embassy in Israel’s handling of investigations into nine US citizens killed in the occupied West Bank by Israeli settlers or security forces over the past four years.

The Maryland Democrat accused Ambassador Mike Huckabee and his staff of concealing information to shield the Israeli government, after he and more than 30 colleagues wrote to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Huckabee in March over the killing of Nasrallah Abu Siyam, a 19-year-old US-Palestinian from Philadelphia.

"The American embassy in Israel is hiding information about the killing of American citizens," Van Hollen said in a video posted on X, calling on Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Jim Risch to investigate what he described as a cover-up. He also accused the Biden and Trump administrations of failing to secure justice and accountability for US citizens killed in the occupied West Bank.

The demand follows a New York Times report, citing US officials and documents, that David Milstein, a senior adviser to Huckabee, suppressed an embassy report on the status of investigations into the nine killings.
