Down the Genre Bending Rabbit Hole
If you told me a year ago I'd be obsessed with an avant-garde Indian-British electronic fusion artist, I'd have laughed in your face. And yet here we are...
My obsession with A.R. Rahman's sounds dominated my understanding of music for a long time.
But at sound engineering college in Chennai, my Delhi-raised batchmates exploded my musical horizons. They popped out new names and genres into our late night conversations, and class demos.
It was there I first heard of Nitin Sawhney, my friends spinning out tracks with their odd time signatures and unusual instruments. Like a new spice for the ears, Sawhney's music intrigued me. My brain soaked up the complex rhythms and textures as if sampling an exotic dish.
Through my friends' playlists, I stepped into Sawhney's musical world.
The unusual arrangements on songs like "The Conference" from Beyond Skin grabbed me immediately, its unconventional percussion and instrumentation hinting at creative lands I'd never explored. I wanted to wander deeper.
Like stepping through a wardrobe into Narnia, his soundscapes took me places I'd never been. Genres blended like magic potions, traditions danced together as if at a cosmic wedding. Each track brimmed with intent—I could feel Sawhney's messages radiating energy into the universe.
"Dead Man" from Philtre became a repeated listen, its melancholic tones and ghostly vocals etching into my psyche.
But the most moving piece of music ever, ranking in the top 3 of my list, is The Namesake's opening titles. Each time I hear it, those melodic notes bring me to tears.
The way the music effortlessly pulls you into the unsettling truths of life, lays bare profound realities in mere minutes—this is sheer compositional genius.
His ability to be able to sculpt sound itself into a mirror of the human experience - This is the power of music I aspire to compose with one day.
Sawhney taught me the alchemy of bending genres, merging languages, creating from the heart's true vision.
His compositions hold secrets, wisdom transmitted by melody, rhythm, and sample. He reminds us music, like life, need not constrain itself to categories. With open ears and mind, beauty emerges.
Nitin Sawhney has indeed shaped my artistic outlook. I owe much of my success to Sawhney's influence - he opened my mind to worlds of sound I'd never imagined. For me, he securely occupies that top spot among artistic influences.
If you enjoyed this personal glimpse into a transformative artist's influence, let me know. I'm happy to share more stories spotlighting my other top creative influences.
Did you enjoy reading this?
Let me know what you thought - I'd love to hear your feedback.
Should I continue sharing my artistic influences?
I'm open to keeping these musical journeys going by profiling other inspirational creators. Let me know
