May is Mental Health Awareness Month, an important time to talk about something we don't address enough in the public safety field — the toll this work takes on the people who do it.

This is a field where you're always on. Ready to respond at any hour, carrying the weight of other people's worst days. That's real, and it's important to be honest about it.

Just last month during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we recognized Dispatch Supervisor of the Year Zoila Lechuga, who founded a Wellness Committee that has put in an immense amount of work into creating meaningful resources for their fellow dispatchers.

That's how we can all show up as our best selves — recognizing that taking care of ourselves and each other isn't separate from the job. It's what makes us ready for anything. So this Mental Health Awareness Month, take a moment for yourself. You've earned it.
