Thomas Sankara dared to imagine a Burkina Faso that could stand upright, reject corruption, reduce dependence on foreign powers, elevate women, invest in health and education, produce what it consumed, and prove that African leadership did not have to mean luxury at the top and suffering below. His ideas were not what killed him. What killed him was the fracture around him. The most devastating blow did not come from a foreign soldier crossing Burkina Faso's borders, but from a coup led by Blaise Compaoré, his longtime friend, revolutionary comrade, and one of the men closest to him. On 15 October 1987, Sankara and twelve of his associates were killed, and a revolution that had inspired millions was abruptly broken from within. That is the brutality of betrayal. An enemy attacking from the front can be seen, resisted, and prepared for, but what defense does a visionary have when the person beside him has already chosen power over principle? Sankara's story should haunt Africa because it exposes a weakness outsiders have repeatedly exploited: our divisions, ambitions, jealousies, and willingness to turn against those fighting for something larger than themselves. We praise our heroes after death, print their faces on shirts, quote their speeches, and build monuments to their courage, yet too often we fail them when loyalty actually costs something. Sankara did not need more admirers after his assassination. He needed people around him who would refuse to sell the dream while he was alive. That is the lesson we must confront. A revolution can survive poverty, sanctions, threats, and enemies, but when loyalty fractures inside the house, the door is already open. #uyiosael
