Lamar Jackson hasn't had surgery on his right thumb yet. There are a few variables at play, but a return is still possible this season. As for his long term future, there won't be any contract discussions until after the season. The Ravens want Jackson long term, always have.
The Jaguars gave a guy a $3.8 million contract to make a football spin the right number of times.
His name is Ross Matiscik, he's the highest-paid long snapper in NFL history, and getting that spin right is most of his job. Morgan Cox, another All-Pro snapper, told ESPN his number on field goals is three and a half spins. When it's humid out or the game's at altitude, he scoots his feet closer to the holder or farther back, just to keep it at three and a half.
Here's why these guys obsess over it. The ball has to show up with the laces in the exact right spot so the holder can slap it down with the laces facing the goal posts. If they come in sideways, the holder has to twist the ball while the kicker is already running at it. Snap to kick takes about 1.3 seconds, so there's no time to fix anything.
Now do the math. Seven yards at 35 mph is about four tenths of a second in the air. Fitting three and a half spins into that means the ball is turning around 500 times a minute. If the spin is off by a tenth of a turn, the laces land two inches from where they should be. That gives him roughly a 3% margin for error, and the second the ball leaves his hands he has to pop up and block somebody.
That's the same skill Connor Pay is showing off here, from shotgun. He started 41 games at center for BYU and coaches there now. When his snap gets there, the laces are already under the fingers, right where you'd grip it to throw.
Pay said on a podcast before the 2025 draft that on an under-center snap, the spot where the ball lands is a little different for every quarterback, depending on how long his arms are and how he's built. So the really good centers learn one specific guy's hands and snap to them.
Quarterbacks notice right away when it goes wrong. On a quick pass, every split second spent spinning the ball around to find the laces is time the defense gets for free. Snapping it perfectly is hard enough that Michigan and North Carolina went to something called the dead snap. The center palms the end of the ball and sends it back with barely any spin, mostly so bad snaps stop killing drives.
A ball spinning 500 times a minute has to land on a two-inch spot in less than half a second. The great ones do it so often that you only learn their names the day they miss.
