@washingtonpost So the state could label anybody they want as an “illegal immigrant,” and without the rights of due process, there’d be no way to prove you were a citizen
The longer the fights go on, the more difficult they will get. But we can’t afford to lose hope, we have to endure, we have to hold out. And if we can hold out until January of 2027, we will win. https://t.co/IXPpYPPbkE
As much as current events are drawing nearly all of our attention, we need to keep thinking about the future, keep thinking about big picture issues like healthcare. Universal healthcare is still the moral and pragmatic thing to do.
Standing up to fascism in this country has become more dangerous, but it is more critical than ever that we continue to do so. I don't know exactly what the way forward is, but I know we have to find it.
It worries me how people don’t seem to understand this point. Political violence begets more political violence. And each and everytime it happens, it weakens our institutions even more. That’s why political violence of any kind needs to be strongly and immediately condemned, by everybody.
What comes next? Take a few days, a few weeks, whatever you need, to lick your wounds. Then it’s time to get back to the work. With a fascist headed to the white house there’s gonna be a lot to do
Regardless of what else you think of the conflict we all have to recognize that this kind of rhetoric coming out of Netanyahu’s government is going to do NOTHING but make things worse
Today, the Illinois Supreme Court issued the strongest possible decision finding the Pretrial Fairness Act constitutional and directing courts across the state to implement the law and end the use of money bond on September 18, 2023. 🧵

This is a historic moment for Illinois and for justice. The state Supreme Court has upheld, in the strongest possible terms, the Pretrial Fairness Act, ending money bond in our state. Read our statement here:

The opposition has now stooped to texting Illinois residents Black people's mug shots with warnings that the jail doors will fly open on January 1st.
This isn't just wrong, it's overtly racist.
(note that we blurred this man's face to protect his identity)
This man made a despicable violent threat to Illinois Governor Candidate Darren Bailey. If he comes up with $7500 bond, he walks right out of jail under current law. Under the Safe T Act, a judge would be allowed to keep him in jail. https://t.co/4xUOeAq9se
"Every person person who comes into a courtroom is entitled to the same justice, regardless of what judge their in front, regardless of how much money they have and that's not the case under the money bond system". Jackson Pallar @peopleslobbyusa
"SB4228 is a last dying breath of a monster and should be rivaled. It would completely defeat the purpose of the SAFE-T Act" David from West Suburban DSA calls to defend the Pretrial Fairness Act.
Instead of preparing for the implementation of the Pretrial Fairness Act, @BobBerlin_SA has been busy being the face of a misinformation campaign funded by right-wing extremists. Berlin has repeatedly appeared with racisits Jeanne Ives & Dan Proft.
5% of DuPage is Black & yet 40% of the people incarcerated in the jail are Black.
@BobBerlin_SA has the authority to decide who to charge and who to jail, why is he using that power to disproportionately jail Black people?
Illinois needs the Pretrial Fairness Act.
