Mae Jemison was the first Black woman to go to space. She grew up with her family in Chicago and went to Stanford at the young age of 16. She started working for NASA in 1987, and was sent to space in 1992. Fun Fact: Before she was an astronaut, she served in the Peace Corps.
Born in July 1862, Ida B. Wells was a prominent civil rights advocate in Chicago. She spent her life fighting for equality for Black Americans and women’s suffrage, and she uplifted black voices through her activism. Fun Fact: She was one of the founding members of the NAACP.
