The courtroom was packed to the rafters. British officers sat in solemn silence, clad in their distinctive uniforms. An atmosphere of fear, helplessness and oppressive quiet hung over everything.
In the centre of the court stood a frail yet resolute elderly man, bound in heavy chains. His face bore the marks of exhaustion, but his eyes sparkled with a determination no power on earth could extinguish.
The British judge lifted a sheet of paper from his desk and spoke with calculated gentleness:
"This is your final opportunity. If you simply say that you did not issue this fatwaโฆ you will be honourably acquitted."
The entire assembly fell into rapt attention.
A deathly silence descended upon the court.
Every eye was fixed on this one man.
For a few moments, there was absolute stillness.
Then, in a voice that was weak yet resonant, he declared:
"Yes! This fatwa was written by meโฆ and even today, I stand firmly by my position!"
His words struck like lightning across the entire courtroom.
For a few moments, everyone remained stunned into silence.
The judgeโs face turned crimson with rage.
"Do you realise what this confession means?"
With complete composure and steadfastness, the man replied:
"I know it full well. But a Muslim does not deny the truth merely to save his own life."
The judge trembled with fury.
"The court finds the accused guilty of rebellion against the Crown of Britain! All his property is hereby confiscated, and he is sentenced to life imprisonment in Kalapani (the Andaman Islands)!"
Upon hearing the verdict, the eyes of many present in the court filled with tears.
Yet the most astonishing thing was this: the very man who had just been condemned to life imprisonment wore not a trace of fear on his face only a calm, serene smile.
The chains rattledโฆ
The soldiers began to lead him away.
He looked toward the heavens and said softly:
"The body can be imprisonedโฆ but the voice of truth cannot."
Even in the dark cells of the Andaman Islands, your resolve never broke. When paper and pen were snatched away, you wrote history with pieces of coal on fragments of cloth. Enduring the harshest tortures of imprisonment, you continued to hold high the banner of knowledge and truth.
On 20 August 1861, this man of truth returned to his True Creator. Yet his courage, steadfastness, and sacrifice remain alive to this day on the pages of history.
This was the man of truth Maulana Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi (may Allah have mercy on him). And thus, a Mujahid (warrior of faith) became immortal in the annals of history.
Have you ever heard the name of Allama Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi before?
These are the unsung heroes who laid the very foundation of the freedom we enjoy today. Will you not share the story of this forgotten warrior with the world?
May Allah elevate his ranks, grant him the highest stations in Paradise, and bless us all to follow in the footsteps of such noble souls.
