Too much hype in this post, which weakens its important point. The City of London doesn't actually exist 'outside British law' in the everyday sense. You can't get away with murder. What it does is use ancient privileges to create and exploit loopholes, and lobby to shape law and regulation in its own interests. Its myriad dodgy practices - insider trading, shell companies, offshore trusts, vehicles off the balance sheet, dividend arbitrage, benchmark rigging etc. etc. - are protected from financial laws and regulations by a 1000 yr-old system of privileges and lobbying power, beginning in 1067 and eventually established in Magna Carta 1215. The Remembrancer, the business vote, lobbying hotlines to the Treasury and the Chancellor, freedom from FIA regarding privately-funded foreign trips and deals, and of course the 'revolving door' between City bankers and the government/ public sector, all contribute to its ability to protect its practices from scrutiny and regulation and shape the legal environment.

The ethnic cleansing in East Jerusalem is happening now! Large Israeli forces entered the Silwan neighborhood today, 25 March, to evict 11 Palestinian families from their homes.

Amidst the ongoing illegal and lethal Israeli-American offensive against Iran, Israel is expanding its ethnic cleansing in East Jerusalem, throwing Palestinian families into the streets. The eviction of 11 families, marks the continuation of a massive displacement wave: approximately 2,200 people in Silwan are facing an imminent threat of forced displacement, 150 families (1,500 individuals) in al-Bustan and 90 families (700 individuals) in Baten al-Hawa.

This is the reality of systematic, institutionalized violence and a clear manifestation of an Israeli policy aimed at engineering the demographic balance and "Judaizing" the neighborhood by exploiting discriminatory laws. These measures are designed to expand Israeli presence and control over one of the most politically and religiously sensitive areas in the region, serving as a crucial component of the broader ethnic cleansing currently unfolding across the West Bank.

On this day in 1999, NATO began bombing its illegal bombing campaign of Yugoslavia without permission from the UN Security Council.

Between 1200-2500 civilians were killed and 5000 were wounded. During the 3 months of bombing, NATO dropped between 10-15 tonnes of depleted uranium bombs.

After years of supporting right-wing nationalist forces to undermine and weaken the integrity of Yugoslavia, NATO begun its campaign to break up the socialist state. Though it claimed to be intervening to stop ethnic cleansing, the Assistant to US Secretary of Defense Strobe Talbott revealed the real reason for the war:

"It was Yugoslavia's resistance to the broader trends of political and economic reform, not the plight of Kosovar Albanians, that best explains NATO's war.”

NATO openly bragged about its destruction of Yugoslavia’s infrastructure, with its spokesperson Jaime Shea proudly saying in 1999 “And the fact that the lights went out in 70% of the country…we can turn the power off whenever we need to and whenever we want to.”

Between the 24th of March and 5th of June 1999, 78 industrial sites and 42 energy installations in Yugoslavia were damaged by bombing or missile strikes. The air strikes destroyed over 20 chemical and petrochemical installations, accounting for around 70% of Yugoslavia’s oil-processing capacity.
