Some things are worth our outrage.

Sometimes unkind things need unkind words to deal with them.

Sometimes men police the anger of women to avoid taking responsibility for the maddening stuff women experience.

Outrage isn't the problem.
The outrageous misogyny is the problem.

If a child (or adult) is constantly gauging in with the acceptance or honing in to others- it is not self-esteem. It is safety. The holistic response is to get curious, get on their level- even ask! What are they looking for and how do we encourage their self-attunement! /3

"no one is constantly watching you" is mind-boggling to kids who must always be watching others- to gauge safety, belonging, risk. Maybe they are the 'adult' child at home, maybe they aren't strong in reading social cues, maybe they don't know their place in the world. /2

For too long we've labelled "preoccupation with what others think about you" as low self-esteem. Missing the point. If we recognize this in children, not as self-esteem, but a hyper-vigilance (trauma response) it transforms the help and advice we give! /1

Shae Rich had a tournament at The Way Martial Arts today. She took silver in sparring and bronze in forms in the MENS division. She wasn’t allowed to compete in the women’s! We are beyond proud of her!!!
