The female human body is one of the most remarkable biological systems on Earth.

Things it can do that the male body cannot:

• Create an entirely new organ from scratch — the placenta
• Build a human skeleton, organ by organ, cell by cell
• Release eggs through ovulation
• Menstruate as part of a reproductive cycle
• Produce breast milk as a normal biological function
• Carry another human for months while keeping itself alive too
• Expand a uterus from roughly the size of a pear to large enough for a full-term baby
• Adapt its heart, lungs, blood volume, metabolism, and immune system to support pregnancy
• Give birth
• Go through menopause and another major hormonal transition later in life

And then there's the placenta.

A temporary organ that grows only when needed.

It acts as lungs, kidneys, digestive system, and life-support for a developing human.

It transfers oxygen and nutrients, removes waste, regulates hormones, and helps protect the baby.

Then, after months of nonstop work, the body simply gets rid of it.

Build an organ.
Use it to sustain a human life.
Discard it.

Like it's just another Tuesday.

This is a Cerulean paradise flycatcher, one of the rarest birds in the world.

For more than a century it was believed to be extinct—known only from a single specimen collected in 1873—until one was found in the last fragments of its ruined forest in the 1990s.

The few found since live only on the island of Sangihe, Indonesia, where the Baru Gold Corp has finally obtained permission to mine the island.

The locals have fought this for years, fearing for their settlements and water supplies, but they and this beautiful and unique little bird don't matter to the Indonesian government as it continues its large-scale environmental destruction.

The student loan system is a shambles. I left university with a debt of £42,139.

I have worked continuously for a decade and when I last checked I had paid back £21,045.

My balance was however £44,727 - higher than when I left.

The interest payments on plan 2 student loans do not behave like an ordinary debt. The interest on it is variable; pegged to inflation - not CPI, the measure the govt routinely uses, but RPI which most economists say overstates inflation.

The interest also goes UP as you earn more - making it harder to pay off the debt.

There are not many alternatives available to 17/18 year olds whose parents can't afford to pay the fees and the Treasury Select Committee, having taken evidence from hundreds of graduates, said the loans had been mis-sold.
