I read a paper today that includes an abbreviation and acronym WORD BANK, that pops up in the pdf when you hover the cursor over an abbreviation in-text. This is the most useful thing I have ever seen in my life and we should all be doing this. @AcademicChatter

@dr_gypsy That is good to know, with many schools making their applications more accessible this year it really doesn’t hurt to apply and see what happens! I’m glad you were able to be accepted into programs without meeting all the criteria they set.

@Pjsandzoom Thanks, that is good advice! I’m sure being able to explain your specific situation would help you in the application process. Did you also get advice for new experiences you should seek out between applying and the start of the program?

@astrosnat @AcademicChatter Thanks for sharing! I’m glad your doc program recognized your capability and saw value in having a background different from the students they typically admit.

However, I wonder how typical those experiences are compared to (what I assume is) the norm of people who are competitive in every aspect of their application receiving an acceptance.

These stories can be useful by inspiring people who may not typically apply to actually try and apply to doc programs. This could subsequently help increase the diversity of students in doc programs by having a wider pool of applicants to choose from.
