Lindsay was failed miserably by her medical team.

She had disclosed suicidal thoughts to her medical providers and even voluntarily checked herself into a mental health facility for five days in January, weeks before this tragedy occurred.

Lindsay was prescribed more than nine different psychiatric medications in the months leading up to the deaths of her children, with at least eight medication changes occurring within a three week period.

Anyone familiar with psychiatric medications understands that many medications require careful monitoring, gradual adjustments, and time for the body to adapt. Rapidly starting, stopping, and switching medications, especially in someone already experiencing severe postpartum psychosis, can create an incredibly dangerous situation.

Because Lindsay was already experiencing postpartum psychosis adding in the constant medication changes may have contributed to a perfect storm in which her illness spiraled completely out of control.

Lindsay is not denying that she killed her children. Her defense is that she was not legally responsible for her actions because she was not in her right mind at the time and was experiencing a severe psychotic episode.

She was not a bad mother. She is not automatically a bad person. This was a mother suffering from a devastating mental illness that, ultimately that took control.

And if you have never witnessed someone actively experiencing psychosis, it is difficult to understand just how completely disconnected from reality a person can become. That is not an excuse for what happened. But understanding the difference between accountability and legal responsibility is important.

Her husband has chosen to stand by her because he was there when she was begging and pleading for help. He was there when she voluntarily checked herself into a mental health facility. He has been with her every step of the way, and he knows the woman he loves is not defined solely by the worst thing that happened during a severe psychotic episode.

This case is heartbreaking beyond words, for the children, for their family, and for everyone affected. But it also raises serious questions about postpartum psychosis, psychiatric medication management, and what happens when someone is desperately asking for help but the system fails to adequately protect them.
