BICYCLING REMAINS A FRINGE FORM OF TRANSPORTATION IN NYC ACCORDING TO THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ALTERNATIVES OWN DATA

After years of aggressively converting scarce street space into bike lanes, NYC DOT's own data show bike/micromobility accounts for just 2.9% of all NYC trips:

Cars: 38.5%
Walking: 37.6%
Transit: 20.7%
Bike/micromobility: 2.9%

And bike/micromobility's share actually fell from 3.1% in 2022 to 2.9%.

Yet, City Hall and the New York City Department of Transportation Alternatives continue reallocating finite street capacity to dedicated bicycle infrastructure, including projects that remove travel lanes, constrain curb access, and complicate bus and vehicle movement.

This shouldn't be an ideological question about whether bicycles are good or bad.

It's a question of allocation.

When 97.1% of trips are made principally by something other than bike/micromobility, every project that takes capacity away from substantially more heavily used modes should have to demonstrate a commensurate transportation benefit.

Street space may be public, but it isn't unlimited.

Infrastructure policy should reflect how New Yorkers actually travel; not how transportation activists wish they traveled.

So now all of a sudden, you have thousands and thousands of people that have been handed nets that have been living one way for hundreds of thousands of years.

"They don't give a sh*t about malaria. They have their own way of dealing with malaria. They sit in smoky huts at night, they sleep with a campfire. Everything else, yes, they still get malaria, some of them, but they deal with it their own way. Bill Melinda Gates Foundation come in, hand out millions of mosquito nets, absolutely collapse the entire population of fish that feed millions of people.

"Because these people just take the nets and fish all the baby fish out so that those fish don't grow up to make substantial protein sources. So now these wonderful 'philanthropists' that have given out millions of nets, have destroyed an ecosystem, crashed a fish population and created widespread hunger for people that otherwise had plenty of resources, all because they were trying to 'help' with their mosquito nets."

GALANTE: "It's just like. It's a f*cking disaster, dude. They've taken such a rich and important part of Africa, one of the most abundant freshwater fisheries in the world, and destroyed it. Because they're 'helping' by handing out mosquito nets."
