March is #Seagrass Awareness Month. As my colleague @StacyScientist shares, these unique ecosystems absorb carbon dioxide from the ocean, helping to reduce the impacts of climate change.
Wildlife crossings 🐻🐾
Definition: Bridges, underpasses, and culverts to connect wildlife habitat, helping animals and vehicles avoid each other.
How well they work: One CO study found they reduced collisions by 90% from 2015 to 2020. https://t.co/mDP9CduQEF
I’m glad to see this partnership between Virginia and @DeptofDefense. The recognition of climate security as a national security issue through the Sentinel Landscapes Partnership can help make important strides in land conservation. https://t.co/vncXPIoCfC
As our climate changes, the approach to supporting the health and sustainability of America’s national forests must also shift. Data from my @pewtrusts colleagues and Conservation Science Partners can inform science-based decisions for the @forestservice. https://t.co/2ltEY4gq3A
ICYMI: The Biden administration protected public lands around the Chaco Culture National Historical Park from new oil and gas leasing for 20 years.
This protects one of the oldest, most culturally significant Native American sites. #ProtectChaco https://t.co/SCl6OabCdq
California’s Big Mill Creek is a refuge for salmon facing impacts from drought and climate change.
With @CaltransHQ funding, the conservation organization @CalTrout recently launched an effort to improve creek conditions for the species that rely on it.
West Virginia’s Indian Run is critical to the surrounding ecosystem’s health and fish migration.
Locals are working to replace culverts with a bridge to allow the river to flow freely and reduce the risk that the road could wash away during a flood.
The Hamma Hamma River is one of 19 rivers on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula proposed for federal protection under the #WildOlympics Wilderness & Wild & Scenic Rivers Act.
The move would support clean drinking water, local agriculture, the local economy, and more.
In 2022, Colorado designated Escalante Creek as an Outstanding Water because it:
💧 Is a valuable source of clean water.
🐟 Provides rare and critical habitat for fish and other aquatic species in an otherwise arid region of the state.
New Mexico’s Pecos River supports endangered species, provides clean drinking water, and creates outdoor recreation opportunities in the area.
Recently, the river was designated as an Outstanding Water, protecting it for generations to come. #ProtectOurPecos
Happy #NationalRiversMonth!

…and more. Here’s a look at a few rivers that communities are working to restore and protect, or have recently protected. 👇 🧵
But that's not the best news! The best news 🎉 is these 5,600 acres CAN MOVE THIS YEAR in the Farm Bill, a must-pass piece of legislation 🏛 with jurisdiction over Eastern forests. The most recent Farm Bill designated wilderness acres in the Cherokee National Forest of Tennessee.
✅Proposed by local stakeholders in 2011
✅Recommended by the USFS in 2014
