14th September 2026 shall be remembered as a day of “Digital Somersault” and also
as a day of “Betrayal & Surrender” by the Union BJP Govt, as it opened the door for
imposing a “UPI Transaction Tax” on UPI transactions above Rs. 2000, with effect
from 15th October 2026. The Govt and the National Payments Corporation of India
(NPCI) are presently putting the charge at 0.4% for P2M (Person-to-Merchant)
transactions.

IMPOSITION OF UPI TRANSACTION TAX IS BETRAYAL-BACKSTABBING-
DOUBLE CROSSING OF PEOPLE OF INDIA

In two separate PIB Press releases dated 30th April 2026 & 24th August 2026,the Modi Govt has admitted that in the year 2025-26, there were 24,162 Crore
UPI transactions worth Rs. 314 Lakh Crore. In the present year 2026-27, it is expected at
Rs. 400 Lakh Crore.
● Out of these transactions, transactions above Rs. 2000 are 63% of the total, i.e.,
valuing Rs. 200 Lakh Crore as per the 2025-26 figures and 253 Lakh Crore for the
year 2026-27.
● The Govt claims that presently 5% of transactions are P2M (Person to Merchant)
transactions.That being so, for the year 2026-27, P2M transactions above Rs. 2000
will be valued at Rs. 12.60 Lakh Crores. A transaction tax of 0.4% will be Rs. 5,040
Crores.
● Imagine the consequences of an additional burden of Rs. 5040 Crores being
imposed now through a 0.4% UPI transaction tax that will burden the traders,
shopkeepers, and merchants at large. Needless to say, the final burden will be on the
consumer as it will get passed on.
● By amending Section 10-A of “The Payment and Settlement Systems Act”
surreptitiously and through “The Taxation & other laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026”,
the Govt of India, by notification, can change the rate of UPI transaction tax
upwards at any time, as also add any other category, including the most widely
used Person to Person (P2P) category also.
● If in future, Govt was to impose 1% tax on all categories of UPI transactions,
tax will jump to Rs. 2,53,000 Crores annually on the UPI volume transactions
of the year 2026-27. This is the dangerous power assumed by the Modi Govt for
itself, which is a betrayal of the people.
