While Lionel Messi was collecting his World Cup runners-up medal at 39, the VIP box was filled with legends he once shared the pitch with—Carles Puyol, Sergio Ramos, Iker Casillas, Andrés Iniesta, Xavi Hernández, and others.

Most of them have long retired. Casillas retired at 39. Puyol at 36. Xavi at 39. Iniesta at 40. Ramos, now 40, is without a club.

Messi? He was still leading Argentina to a World Cup final, finishing as the tournament's second-highest goalscorer and second-highest assist provider while climbing to second on the all-time FIFA World Cup scoring list.

Longevity. Greatness. Consistency.

We may never witness another career like this.

NO ONE SITS AT MESSI'S TABLE. 🐐🇦🇷

Ángel Di María on Lionel Messi missing out on the Best Player of the Tournament award to Rodri.

🗣️ “Ive shared a dressing room with Lionel Messi for almost two decades, and I can say this without hesitation: what FIFA did is one of the most disrespectful decisions I’ve ever seen in football.”

“At 39 years old, Leo wasn’t surviving at this World Cup he was leading it. He carried Argentina, decided the biggest matches, inspired every player around him and proved, once again, why he’s the greatest footballer in history. If that’s not the tournament’s best player, then I honestly don’t know what is.”

“This has nothing to do with Rodri. He’s a fantastic footballer and deserves respect. But anyone who watched this World Cup knows who the face of the tournament was. Every stadium waited for Messi’s next touch. Every opponent feared him. Every Argentine believed because our captain was on the pitch.”

“Sometimes football gets it wrong, and this is one of those moments. You can’t watch everything Messi did at his age, under that pressure, against the best teams in the world, and then tell me someone else defined the tournament more than he did. That’s impossible for me to accept.”

“They can keep the trophy. They can keep the votes. History won’t remember a voting panel it will remember that a 39-year-old Lionel Messi walked into another World Cup, dominated the biggest stage in football and reminded the entire world why no one has ever reached his level. For me, he’ll always be the real Golden Ball winner.”

Messi. SIEMPRE MESSI.

🚨Cafu on Rodri winning the Golden ball over Lionel Messi at the World Cup.

🗣️“There have been many times at this World Cup that a lot fans and pundits talk about how controversial the World Cup games for Argentina is in their favor but this decision from FIFA is way off the charts.”

“Lionel Messi deserves every bit of respect and recognition for this World Cup, he was outstanding in every single game for Argentina, and if winning the World Cup trophy gets you the golden ball award then they should just retire the Sport. No need to for great players to waste their efforts and later get nothing out of it.”

“That’s the worst decision I’ve seen in a World Cup final, Rodri is an exceptional player with great talent but looking at the stats at this World Cup between him Lionel Messi there’s no comparison at all, the stats don’t lie and the performance as well don’t lie too - so why would this be different from performances.”

Toni Kroos on the claims that Argentina robbed Egypt at the World Cup:
🗣️ "I don't understand why people always look for excuses after a result like this. Football is decided over 90 minutes, not by one moment. Egypt played an excellent first half, but after going 2–0 up they lost control of the game, and Argentina took advantage. That's what top teams do.
"People keep talking about the referee and VAR, but if you watch the match objectively, Argentina's comeback was built on their intensity, quality, and mentality. They believed until the final whistle, while Egypt couldn't maintain the same level they showed early on.
"You can't throw away a two-goal lead against one of the best teams in the world and then reduce everything to one decision. Football is much more complex than that.
"There will always be debates about refereeing, and that's normal. But saying the match was 'stolen' or that the tournament is being handed to Argentina is unfair to every player on the pitch. The players decide games with their performances, not conspiracy theories.
"The difficult thing after defeat is accepting that the opponent was better in the decisive moments. Argentina deserved credit for the way they responded under pressure, and Egypt should be proud of their performance while also learning from the mistakes that cost them. That's football."

Poco después, ella habría comenzado a enviarle largos mensajes pidiéndole perdón e intentando volver.
