Remember his iconic statement by Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano from the CJ Corona impeachment trial?
“If your client cannot explain, I cannot abstain. If you did not disclose, we have to depose. If you are not fit, you should not sit as the CJ of our Supreme Court.”
Cayetano meant that if Chief Justice Renato Corona couldn't explain or disclose these hidden financial assets, the Senate was legally and morally obligated to remove ("depose") him as he was unfit to hold office as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Back then, Cayetano was all about absolute financial transparency.
He famously pushed to scrutinize Corona's bank records.
Fast forward to the impeachment trial of VP Sara Duterte. The prosecution is calling on those exact same thing: to subpoena her financial records.
Interestingly, Cayetano recently admitted, “I can tell you honestly right now, I don't know what to vote for...".
Ah, really? Why don’t you watch this clip?
Let’s see how he will vote in regards to the issuance of a subpoena for these financial records.
Will he stick to his old battle cry, or nag-iba ang ihip ng hangin?
Is it a yea or a nay?
Hindi umattend sa impeachment. Hindi sumunod sa NBI subpoena. Hindi sumunod sa mga COA rules. Hindi umattend sa budget hearing. VP Sara does not respect the government of which she is a part. Bakit natin siya gagawing Presidente?
@jfangs90@newswatchplusph Kung sino sino?
Robin Padilla to argue that only a Zoom host's recording is the original? (which is wrong)
Hindi lang para ang mga DDS eh. may online propaganda.
Pero dahil nde niya kaya tanungin or i-manifest sa trial on the spot!
😂
WHO IS ATTY. VIRGIL LIGUTAN BEFORE THIS WEEK?
Atty. Virgil Ligutan was a pro bono human rights lawyer before being thrust into the national spotlight this week.
He helped free Bambi Beltran: an award-winning artist, writer, and recipient of the 2020 Deutsche Welle (DW) Freedom of Speech award.
She was arrested on April 19, 2020 without a warrant and was detained for 60 hours because her satirical FB post about the COVID-19 situation in Sitio Zapatera had enraged the late Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella.
Her second arrest came on August 12, 2020, on a cyber-libel case filed by an April Dequito.
The third arrest was on May 26, 2023 when police from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Cebu Provincial Field Unit (CIDG-PFU) appeared at Beltran’s doorstep around 4 pm.
Ligutan took on the case and made sure that Bambi would get the best legal aid she could. The case has since been dismissed.
And now, he’s a pro bono private prosecutor for the House of Representatives still fighting for human rights and accountability in the impeachment trial of BP Sara Duterte.
👏👏👏

Timely reminder: the primary authors of the 2021 law of the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) —are Senator PIA Cayetano, Ralph Recto and Imee Marcos in the Senate.
Only three Philippine senators—Franklin Drilon, RISA Hontiveros, and Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan—voted against the POGO law in 2021.
