“Quero começar agradecendo a pessoa que me apresentou e me introduziu esta noite. Ele acha que esta �� a primeira vez que me introduz em alguma coisa, mas o que talvez não esteja levando em consideração é que, através de suas décadas de narrativas fascinantes, Steven Spielberg me introduziu, sem saber, e a inúmeras outras pessoas, ao seu clube sagrado de construção expansiva de mundos.

Desde que era criança, toda vez que imaginava algo, ele queria fazer tudo que fosse humanamente possível para conseguir mostrar aquilo ao público. Eu vi seus filmes transitarem entre diferentes gêneros — ação, ficção científica, épicos históricos, drama, comédia romântica, fantasia e musical — e o vi dominar cada um deles. E esse tipo de criatividade sem limites não inspira apenas cineastas em ascensão.

Por causa de exemplos como o de Steven, eu confiei na minha imaginação, mesmo quando ela me levava para lugares novos e desconhecidos. E, toda vez que eu imaginava alguma coisa, queria fazer tudo que fosse humanamente possível para conseguir tocar aquilo para vocês.

Há alguns meses, quando o Songwriters Hall of Fame me perguntou sobre meus heróis, os criativos que moldaram minha forma de contar histórias e quem eu gostaria que me apresentasse neste prêmio, eu disse o nome de Steven. E, cerca de uma hora depois, para minha alegria, acabei ao telefone com ele e com sua lendária e radiante esposa, Kate Capshaw, que está aqui esta noite.

Ele me disse que sim, com certeza, ficaria encantado em estar aqui. E eu fiquei completamente impressionada porque, afinal, ele tem um enorme filme chamado Disclosure Day estreando à meia-noite desta noite, e mesmo assim concordou em aparecer e fazer isso por mim apenas algumas horas antes da estreia.

Eu pensei: ‘Isso não seria impossível? Não seria difícil equilibrar tudo isso? Não seria complicado em termos de agenda?’ Eu estava praticamente tentando convencê-lo a tirar uma soneca.

Foi então que Kate disse algo que eu jamais vou esquecer: ‘Coisas boas e verdadeiras são fáceis.’

E, quando olho para trás e vejo meus 23 anos de carreira na música — os altos e baixos, as batalhas da indústria, as provações e tribulações, as lágrimas e as comemorações, a avalanche de dúvidas, as críticas justas e injustas, a perda completa da privacidade, as turnês mundiais, as guerras de ego e as reviravoltas do destino, todo o caos absolutamente mágico deste caminho que escolhi quando era jovem demais para sequer lembrar que aquilo um dia foi uma escolha —, compor músicas foi a coisa mais fácil que já fiz.

Não porque não exigisse esforço — exigia, e muito. Não porque não fosse frustrante às vezes — porque podia ser. E não porque minhas composições não me perseguissem incansavelmente até que eu encontrasse a rima interna perfeita para a terceira linha do segundo verso de um poema.

Meus professores me chamavam a atenção na sala de aula por eu não estar prestando atenção, porque eu estava pensando em letras. Isso realmente aconteceu.

Mas, quando digo que compor músicas foi a parte mais fácil para mim, acho que o que quero dizer é que foi algo instantâneo. Ninguém me ensinou a fazer isso.

Eu precisei aprender a entreter uma plateia, aprender coreografias, ser menos irritante, navegar pela indústria e proteger ferozmente a mim mesma e minha sanidade. Tive que aprender tudo isso ao longo do tempo, através de lições difíceis, enormes quantidades de tentativa e erro, caos e calamidades.

Mas compor músicas, para mim, é praticamente a única coisa que eu simplesmente fiz de forma natural.”

It was a Monday in early August 2023. The exhausted truck drivers of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour thought they were heading to a routine production meeting before the Los Angeles shows.
