UPDATE: Dr. Widdowson Speaks Out After Arrest: “Warning Sign of Growing Totalitarianism in Canada”
After being arrested at the University of Lethbridge and released from custody with what a $600 trespass ticket, Dr. Frances Widdowson called on Alberta Premier @ABDanielleSmith to restore freedom of expression on Alberta’s campuses.

“It’s my views that make them see it as necessary to have me removed and charged with trespass,” said Dr. Widdowson, who has been vocal about the lack of evidence in the alleged mass graves of Indigenous children found in Kamloops, B.C.

“Premier Danielle Smith, if you don’t act in this case, you’re never going to act. You need to let universities know that freedom of speech on their campuses is an incredibly important value," she urges.

"If we can’t have freedom of speech on our university campuses, we’re not going to be able to disseminate knowledge to young people, train professionals properly, or have the bulwark against authoritarianism that we need in this society.”

Earlier today, Dr. Widdowson was arrested after returning to campus despite a trespass notice issued by the university, which had cited concerns that her presence posed a risk to the health and safety of some students. Follow @MediaBezirgan for more.

China bought the Beaver Brook mine in Newfoundland for $29.5 million. Shuttered it in 2023. One year later, Beijing banned antimony exports to the US military. Prices went from $5,900/tonne to nearly $60,000. This mine could produce 5% of global supply. Instead it sits idle under Chinese state control, an hour from a Canadian military base designated for F-35s. The US launched a $10 billion critical minerals reserve. Signed 11 bilateral deals. Canada signed zero. Carney calls China a “strategic partner.” China is using our own resources as a weapon against the West.

The Notwithstanding Clause is integral to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and an unassailable provincial constitutional right.

Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed insisted it be included to protect the autonomy of provinces to uphold the values and priorities of the people they represent from decisions of activist courts.

In Alberta, we have used it carefully and lawfully to stand up for the parental right to be involved in their children’s lives, to protect children so they can make important health decisions as adults, to ensure fairness in sport, and to keep students learning in the classroom.

We are extremely disappointed that Minister Sean Fraser would risk national unity and a foundational principle of our constitution by attempting to attack the use of the notwithstanding clause by sovereign provincial governments.
